The importance of Nurturance

Doctors Julie and John Gottman talked about emotional coaching and how it can help children starting at a young age develop their emotional intelligence. Emotion coaching is what parents can do to help the child verbalize what they are feeling. In order to effectively emotion coach, the parent should validate what the child is feeling, listen to what the child may be trying to communicate and help the child form those feelings into words.      A scenario that you could consider is when a child has lost their favorite toy and instead of using words to explain their frustrations they may begin to cry or throw a fit. A parent can recognize that they are upset and ask the child what is wrong. If the child does not directly answer, the parent can ask if they are sad, angry, tired, hungry, etc... By asking these questions the child can give easier answers that can help narrow down what the problem is. Once the parent finds out the child is angry or sad, the p...

In a book titled, “The Ten Basic Principles of Good Parenting” written by Dr. Laurence Steinberg (2005), readers can begin to learn how to adapt parenting to fit a child rather than make a child conform to parenting styles. Five areas of adaptation were discussed for parents:  -Keep pace with your child's development -Adjust your parenting to your child's temperament -Your child is unique -Have patience during developmental transitions -Your changing role as a parent      Chapter four goes into depth with these five principles but something that I would say is the most important thing to take out of this part of the book is that children grow and develop to become independent one day. Parents must have patience, love, and understanding in order to help their child grow and develop to their fullest potential starting at a young age. If you wo...

I feel like a lot of the time, children are misunderstood within families. Parenting is so crucial for a child's growth, and I think that parents are either too worried that they aren't doing enough to keep their children safe but, in the process, stop the child from learning, or parents may really not be doing enough, allowing the child to run all over the parent. Children are so important. Family is so important. It is definitely not easy raising a child, but there are so many support systems out there whether that be family, friends, or articles online that can help you know how to guide your children.       There are three types of parenting styles that Diana Baumrind talked about. There is the authoritarian parenting style which is only a limits relationship without allowing any freedom (can be thought of as a jaw breaker), a permissive or “doormat” parenting style which is a freedom relationship with no limits (can be related to a mars...
